Your Tax File Number (TFN) is a unique identifier used to manage your tax and super affairs in Australia. It’s a crucial piece of personal information, and if it falls into the wrong hands, it can be used for identity theft or tax-related fraud.
If you suspect that your TFN has been stolen or misused, it’s essential to act promptly.
1. Contact the ATO Immediately
If you think your TFN has been compromised—whether through a scam, lost documentation, or a data breach—contact the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on 13 28 61. They’ll assess the situation and may apply additional security measures to your ATO record to prevent unauthorised access or activity.
You may be referred to the ATO Client Identity Support Centre, which assists individuals affected by identity theft and works to protect your tax information.
2. Report the Theft to the Relevant Authorities
If your TFN was stolen as part of a broader identity theft, also report the incident to:
- Australian Cyber Security Centre (ReportCyber).
- IDCARE, Australia’s national identity and cyber support service
They can provide guidance on securing your identity and recovering from the breach.
3. Monitor Your Accounts
Keep a close eye on your myGov account, bank statements, and credit reports. Look for any unfamiliar activity, such as unexpected changes to your tax account or loan applications in your name.
You may also consider placing a credit alert or freeze through credit reporting agencies.
4. Be Scam Aware
After a TFN theft, you may become a target for further scams. Be cautious of unsolicited calls, emails or texts claiming to be from the ATO or government bodies. The ATO will never threaten you with immediate arrest or request payment via unusual methods, such as gift cards.
Stay Safe
Protecting your TFN is just as important as protecting your bank details. If in doubt, seek help early—it’s the best way to limit the damage and protect your identity.
